What Does The Bible Say About Horoscopes and Astrology?

This question is from Jenny who wants to know where to locate some Bible verses. I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about what the Bible says about the topic as well

I know in the Bible it talks about staying away from
astrology and horoscopes. I was hoping you could help me find those
scriptures.

Jenny

There are a lot of Christians who read horoscopes and just have fun with them. They don’t necessarily believe them or rely on them they just think they are a harmless diversion.

This is not an exhaustive article on astrology and the Christian; just some thoughts for the ladies who read here about what it means to follow a horoscope, follow God and be discerning.

Truly, we have liberty as Christians to enjoy fun things. And I would never judge you to be doing something wrong if you enjoy having fun with a horoscope because I don’t know your heart or your motives.  But I do feel like I need to caution any Christian who is dabbling with horoscopes or astrology because God’s Word cautions us not to have anything to do with it. At the worst it is an occult practice. At the best it is a worthless and useless practice (Titus 3:9).

  • Constellations have been tracked and studied for millennia.
  • The ancient Greeks and Egyptians knew about the Zodiac and used it to keep track of the arrival of each season long before Christ was born.
  • Men have used the constellations to tell the story of God’s redemptive plan.
  • The  Bible has many references to the stars and to the fact that God created constellations.  The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:14 that the sun, moon and stars were given to us as “signs” and “seasons” which means they are given to us to use to measure time.
  • The stars were used as a memorial to Abraham so that every time he looked at the night sky he was reminded of God’s promise (Genesis 15:5).
  • In Isaiah 13, Joel 3 and Matthew 26 we’re told of astronomical events that will accompany the final judgment of the earth.

However, there is no indication in God’s Word that the constellations have any hidden meaning at all.

Astrology is a false belief that wisdom comes from the stars.  Our wisdom comes from God alone (James 1:5).   Remember Daniel?  His wisdom from God brought the royal astrologers to shame.
God lists astrologers as those who will share a part in being burned to stubble in Isaiah 47, God forbade the Israelites to worship the “host of heaven”  in Deuteronomy 4 and astrology is forbidden by God in Deuteronomy 18.

That’s what the Bible says about astrology. I had rather be so consumed with Jesus and His Kingdom that I don’t give a thought to looking at a horoscope or playing with astrology. I pray fervently that God will keep me from indulging in useless practices, however innocent they may seem,  that may take my eyes off of Jesus.

    Well said Sylvia! Thanks

Thanks for this article! For me, things like horoscopes (and even Bible verse daily calendars) can be a snare for me when I get impatient with God. I end up looking for my answers elsewhere – looking for meaning that isn’t there, because God isn’t giving me the specifics I want.

We just have to be patient and let God unfold His work in His own time! :-)

  4. Lavena says:

Thanks for encouraging us to stand fast on the Word!

  5. Hilde says:

I once heard someone say:”don’t look at the stars for your answers, look at the One Who made those stars!” I really like that.

  6. Roxie Boyd says:

What a great reference, thank you Sylvia. This is exactly what I was looking for because my niece who says she is a Christian and loves Jesus, subscribes to a daily horoscope on Facebook, and I just finally had to say something, so I quoted Hilde above and referenced this blog post.

  7. Mpho Shiri says:

Thanks for opening my eyes to the truth. I read horoscopes for innocent fun and now I know the reality of such actions.

  8. TIFFANY SWINT says:

I was wondering what do you know about the astrology and demons are they some way related if you could research that as well as I

    • Sylvia says:

Tiffany, I think the article above says what I know, which is that at worst, it can be an occultic practice, which means that it provides opportunity for demons to to have contact with humans who participate in it.

  9. Bridget says:

Hi, I found this website because I was watching television and a yearly horoscope for the new year came on and I sat there and listened to it.I don’t really don’t ever pay attention to those things but I suggested I was going to have a rough year, it really bugged me but I know its not christian like to listen to those things,I ask you to prayer for me and my family so God can be with us and protect us from these occult practices as I too will pray for us. Thank you

    • Sylvia says:

Bridget, I would be honored to pray for you and your family.

Rely on the Lord. Whether your year is rough or not, realize the truth that the Lord knew what your year would be and He has a plan for you that is intended to benefit you and grow you spiritually.

Astrology is the “interpretation” of an assumed influence the stars (and planets) exert on human destiny. This is a false belief. The royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet Daniel (Daniel 1:20) and were powerless to interpret the king’s dream (Daniel 2:27). God specifies astrologers as among those who will be burned as stubble in God’s judgment (Isaiah 47:13-14). Astrology as a form of divination is expressly forbidden in Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). God forbade the children of Israel to worship or serve the “host of heaven” (Deuteronomy 4:19). Several times in their history, however, Israel fell into that very sin (2 Kings 17:16 is one example). Their worship of the stars brought God’s judgment each time.

The stars should awaken wonder at God’s power, wisdom, and infinitude. We should use the stars to keep track of time and place and to remind us of God’s faithful, covenant-keeping nature. All the while, we acknowledge the Creator of the heavens. Our wisdom comes from God, not the stars (James 1:5). The Word of God, the Bible, is our guide through life (Psalm 119:105).
