Day 5 of Week 1 ~ You’re Just About Finished In The Kitchen!

Today is Day 5 of Week 1 in the kitchen. You’ve made it through! Next week we will work in the Living Room. This weekend, take a break and rest up.

The last thing we will be doing in the kitchen is working on the woodwork, windows and tying up any loose ends of cleaning that you missed or extras you would like to do.

Wood work includes baseboards, widow casings, door frames, moldings, bead-board and cabinets. And you thought you weren’t going to have any wood work to clean! Everyone has woodwork.

Depending on what your woodwork is made of there are various ways to clean it. All my woodwork is painted. So I will clean it first by dusting then washing it with warm water and a mild detergent, then I will dry it with a clean cloth.

I clean windows with a sudsy, warm soap solution, then I rinse and use a little squeegie. If you don’t have a squeegie you can get that same crystal clear look by polishing the glass with a wadded up piece of newspaper. If you want to clean the outsides of your windows, go ahead, I won’t stop you.

After I wash the windows, I clean them with my homemade natural window cleaner.

Remember to enter the drawing for the reversible apron and dish towel! I will draw a name on April 24th.

What do you think?  Has all the work been worth it? Are you looking forward to cleaning the Living Room?  Or dreading it?  😀

Here is a Mcklinky in case you want to show us the sun shining through your clean kitchen windows! Or just give us a look at your clean, organized kitchen!

It’s very narrow, and long. It has a bar to hang stuff on, and has a shelf. But it just needs to be re-done.

  2. Tina Lahr says:

My kitchen looks great! Had to work all day Saturday to get caught up, but was well worth it. I’m really pleased with myself on sticking with this project. I usually run out of motivation by mid week. I owe it to the support of this web site. Thank you and I look forward to cleaning with all of you next week!

    • Sylvia says:

Yay Tina! Way to go, you are doing great. I love getting all the support and accountability too, so I’m glad its helping you!

  3. Cecily says:

We had a rental house and barely two people could fit in the kitchen-not fun. I did want to hop on and say I finally got it done!! I can’t wait until next week–I’ve got a very tiny closet in our living room that we’ve tried to use as a coat closet, but I think it must have been intended to be a broom closet–so I hope to return it to that!!

  4. Jennifer says:

Yes, they do take forever; and I went in and counted my drawers and cabinets. I knew I had a lot, but I didn’t realize it was 40! No wonder they are not full- I just thought I did a good job decluttering before the move. They do look good. I am going to take some pictures because with a sloppy 11 year old boy they will not last as long as I would like. heehee.

    • Sylvia says:

I asked my oldest daughter, Sarah, how many cabinets we had in our old house … she thought for a minute and said, “A million.” LOL Well not a million, but probably at least 36 but I feel like I’m not remembering them all! Now I have 9! Can you believe it?

  5. Cecily says:

Ok, so I’m still not done, but I’ve combined the last 3 days and am doing them all at the same time. I clean out the cabinets, clean the cabinets (all wood) all the way down to the floor. If I come across a small appliance or window I clean it then. I’m getting there. Probably half way done. But, this spring cleaning is going to cost me some $$ discovered that we can’t wait any longer to replace the kitchen cabinet hardware. The hinges are breaking and the doors are sagging and not closing all the way….plus all the door knobs are yucky. Then when cleaning the grease off the vent hood the paint came off—(yes, I do clean it fairly frequently, but it’s old and the person who lived here before me didn’t clean it). Yikes!! At least it’s not too expensive to replace, but that hardware’s gonna hurt- 45 door knobs and 34 sets of hinges—ugh…I guess my kitchen will look new and improved when it’s all said and done. 🙂

  6. Mary says:

My kitchen hasn’t looked this good in a long time. I actually got everything done. My family thought that maybe we should eat only TV/microwave meals in the living room so that the kitchen would stay clean.

I can’t wait to start the next room. My living room is almost as bad as my kitchen was at the beginning of this week.

Thanks, Sylvia, for organizing this and motivating me!

    Mary

  7. Diona says:

Kitchen is almost DONE! Got the tops of the cabinets dusted and cleaned… They were BAD, too! :S Don’t think anyone has cleaned like this in this home for YEARS!

Still have a little bit left to do… Glad we got the hardest room for me out of the way, first!

Have a blessed weekend!!!!! 🙂 Can hardly wait to start the next room!

  8. Mrs T says:

we plugged right along and got the kitchen and pantry done…minus cleaning under the appliances but Hubby will help with that after church this weekend.

total damage count is 3 FULL 50 gal trash bags and a small pile of “stuff” I set my the curb. how on earth we got that much JUNK in such a small area(s) is beyond me!!

still blogging… waiting on pics to be uploaded!

thanks Sylvia for the kick in the backside to get up and CLEAN! we are loving this challenge and Hubby is loving the clean house!

  9. Goodness, those cabinets sure take a long time! Still a bit behind… I’ll get to those counters, small appliances and windows eventually!

  10. Jennifer says:

My kitchen is completely DONE! I am working on the dining room today to get it done since they are barely separated. My cabinets are oak so I had to do a lot of murphy oil soap cleaning this morning. It is nice outside so we have the CLEAN window and door open.

    • Sylvia says:

      Hey Jennifer,
Mine are oak too and it takes for stinkin’ ever to clean them. I am always relieved when they are done, but they look so goood, don’t they?

  11. Penpen says:

I’m just joining in the fun, but will plan on starting this next week. Love it! Can’t wait to have a clean kitchen again!

  12. Kim says:

IT’s totally been worth it Sylvia. Thank you so much for the inspiration each day and the helpful tips. And the apron is adorable!!! I am so an apron wearer.
    HUGS!

  13. Donna says:

Thanks for this! My kitchen looks great and actually sparkles! I can’t wait for Mondayto start on the next room. :o)

  14. Diona says:

Yay! Still working on the cabinets. Seeing all the posts about how many cabinets and drawers everyone has made me count mine. I knew I had a lot, but not that many! LOL 32! And it still doesn’t seem like enough! Of course, one is full of cookbooks and another one is full of home educating supplies… Even found a shelf I am thinking about using for a couple of small appliances!

Thanks for cheering us on, Sylvia!!! 🙂

    • Sylvia says:

That’s a lot of cabinets! You’re blessed and with that blessing comes lots of cleaning, right? 😀
You’re very welcome, Diona, I’m glad you’re with us in this. 🙂

  15. Sylvia says:

You’re so welcome! Yes, the kitchen is the hardest for me too, that’s why I did it first. I figure its hard for a lot of us, so if we get it done it won’t be there waiting in the shadows while we do the rest of the house! 😀

  16. This is soooo worth it!! I am loving that I can keep up!! Just barely, but I am keeping up!! The kitchen is my hardest room of course, but the livingroom is the easiest so that is encouraging!!

Thank you for all your hard work for us, Sylvia!
    Love
    Karen
