The Homekeeper’s Journal ~ Home ~ With Linky Love

The Homekeeper’s Journal is a way to keep track of your thoughts, in   journal form, online. I have given you the prompts, written my own   responses, and given you a Mclinky to use to leave the link to your own   Journal entry. A link back here is nice but not required. Its also a   great way to get traffic moving to your blog and share your thoughts   with others.

This week’s Homekeeper’s Journal is all about Nesting …….

Let’s define our terms ….

Nest - a snug retreat or refuge; resting place; home.

Nesting - to build or have a nest

In my neck of the woods its getting cooler and Autumn isn’t far away. Its time to start nesting and get my home cozy and comfortable for the cooler days ahead.  I want to create a retreat from the world, a resting place, home.

Get your thinking caps on and lets talk about how we can arrange, order, decorate and change our homes so that they are a warm wonderful retreat for our families this Autumn and Winter.

My kitchen would be more inviting if …………. there was some seating. Everyone likes to be in my kitchen but there is only one seat, my rocking chair. Which is really good when I have a friend over, but what about several friends? Or a few of the children? I’ve been thinking of having a kitchen island made by one of our local Amish woodworkers. There is one over at Lehman’s that I like.

My best tip for making a home seem more welcoming ….. keep it picked up and things put away throughout the day. You don’t have to be a superwoman but its just more comfortable for guests and family when the house is picked up and there is a distinct pathway through the house!

To give the feeling of warmth in my home I often ….. light a candle! Really. Candles can make your home seem warmer and cozier. I also use afghans in the cooler months laid across chairs and the sofa for the family to wrap up in when they are chilly.

In the cooler months, it is essential for me to ….. bring in color and items from the outdoors. I like to have colorful leaves, rocks, dried flowers, pine cones and other outdoor items inside. I also need color. So in the Autumn I bring in red, orange, yellow and brown by way of candles, leaves, pottery, fabric and candles.
I enjoy vintage items so I look for things that are colorful and will warm up my house with their color.

Some favorite Autumn/Winter recipes are …..  cinnamon rolls,  Boston Brown Bread, cream of mushroom soup, s’mores and all kinds of stews.  Something good on the stove or in the oven warms up a house like nothing else.

A Quick Tip for making your house more inviting ……  When you don’t have anything cooking but want to make the house smell wonderful, sprinkle some cinnamon on a cookie tray and pop it in the oven, set the temperature to 200*F and let it warm the whole house with its aroma.
