Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce

Hot_fudge_sauce

This is my Mother’s Hot Fudge Sauce recipe.  Its really, really good!  You could use it on ice cream, in homemade sodas, on cakes….slice a banana on a plate and drizzle with the hot fudge sauce, or drizzle it over a pie….  or just eat it by itself if you’re having a chocolate craving…

Hot Fudge Sauce

Makes about 1 1/2 cups

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar (for a richer taste use 1/3 cup packed brown sugar instead)
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
1/8 tsp coarse salt
1 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Combine all ingredients except the vanilla in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a full rolling boil. Boil the mixture for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, add vanilla. Allow to cool before storing.
Store covered in the frig for 1 week. To reheat, place the container of sauce in a pan of hot, but not boiling, water and stir and heat til it is of pouring consistency.

Now, this is a sort of “quick” hot fudge sauce because it uses cocoa powder.  If you want something a little more decadent and time consuming, you can use 7 ounces of bittersweet chocolate, melted, in place of the cocoa.
