The Homekeeper’s Journal ~ August 9

I hope you will join me by participating in The Homekeeper’s Journal every week. The Journal is a way for women at home to keep a record of their days, share what is going on in their lives and connect with other women. I offer writing prompts which means I give you something to write about. Then you just write your thoughts and post them on your blog along with a link to this post.  Be sure you leave a link in the Linky Tool below to your Homekeeper’s Journal post not just your main page.

In my kitchen this week ………. canning tomatoes and preserving herbs. I canned some tomatoes plain and some with basil and garlic.

Around the house …….Trying to clean and organize for a new home-school year. I just have two pupils this year in grades 7 and 11.

The family ….. Hubby is working and gardening. I’ve been on a missions trip out of the country with my youngest son, #1 daughter is visiting in Atlanta, oldest sons are working, one has been offered a promotion at work, youngest daughter is still the light of our lives and we’re all anticipating cooler weather!

New projects …… Lots of sewing projects on my mind, candle making plans, soap making plans, raised beds in the garden. I am not sure I understand women who say there is nothing to do at home all day!

Ideas …… More decluttering is needed, get rid of all these school books we don’t use, 5 new eBooks on my mind.

Light Bulb Moments …… I was reading about how agape love encompasses all the kinds of love and expresses them perfectly. That is God’s love for us. In heaven that agape love will be preeminent and perhaps that is why there will be no need for marriage or having babies in heaven. We will be perfectly fulfilled in every way by our Lord Jesus and His agape love for us.

This week the Journal is about Summer …………

During summer, my kitchen ……. heats up quick! So I try to grill out or have cold meals every day in the months of June, July and August. I rarely bake but when I do, I make sure its very early in the morning or late at night which takes a lot of planning.

One of my favorite things about summer is …the long, slow days where I don’t have to be anywhere or take anyone anywhere …. love the time outside too, in the garden, on the deck and just enjoying nature.

One of the summer things I could do without  …. mosquitoes and drought. We seem to have a lot of water now but it will get really hot and dry soon. Until then, the mosquitoes thrive.

A planned summer or take it as it comes?   ….. Some of both really. We have a planned mission trip and a few planned Church events, but mostly we just take each day as it unfolds.

Summer meals consist of …… grilled stuff, sandwiches, fruit and veggies, easy meals that are light and easy on us during the heat, homemade ice cream and popsicles.

The last thing on my mind during summer is …… school! I have to make myself get busy planning the next school year.

In my kitchen this week ……. I’m making bread, using sourdough starter, canning strawberry jam, freezing broccoli and standing here with my canning tools waiting for the garden to produce more. I’ve also been caking for my youngest son’s missions trip, selling cinnamon rolls and bread. We’ve made over $600 so far!

Doing this and that …. thinking mostly about how to proceed with the bathroom renovations, making a tote for youngest daughter to take to camp, working on new Bible study, decluttering for summer….

We’re getting geared up for summer by ….. getting the grill ready, cleaning up the sticks and leaf debris form our outdoor living area, planting flowers and making the indoor living space clean and stream lined so we don’t have so much to look after all summer

My summer plans include ….. going to Jamaica on a missions trip, sewing, reading a lot, working in the garden, VBS,  teaching a new Bible study and relaxing!

The weather here has been …… very stormy, more so this year than ever before. My heart and prayers go out to those who have been affected by tornadoes this year. Our city had a devastating one 11 years ago and its still evident.

This week’s Journal is all about Home and Garden

This week in my kitchen ………. I have been freezing broccoli. I have another batch that I think I may dry and use in soups this winter.

My gardening thoughts this week ……. Everything is growing well because of all the rain and mild temperatures, but we do need some sunshine! The lettuce is growing like crazy and we’re eating it twice a day. The squash, beans and okra are all up. The herbs are growing well and I have been using a lot of basil already. We have gourds up too! And lots of onions.

What I’d like to can, freeze or put up this year …… Basically everything I can get my hands on!  Nothing is off-limits. And if I don’t know how to can something…. I will either find out or figure it out.

My plans for my home this summer  …….. Lots of painting and redecorating. I am trying to use the rummage sale-thrift store-hand-me-down method!  :O)

This absolutely positively has to be done to my home this year …. At least two new windows. They are sort of pricey so that’s where my money will have to go this summer. The house is 50 years old now and needs some TLC.
