Attitude Of Gratitude ~ 12/10/09

Does your attitude need adjusting? This is the season when its so easy to slip on over into jealousy, self-pity, worry and stress. I find that I often need a good talking-to. So I make myself pray consistently each day for strength, grace, a loving nature, peace and an Attitude of Gratitude toward God.

You know, there are a lot of things in life that are exciting, things that are amazing and bring happiness to us. But the big things don’t come around every day.  Our Joy, like our faith, is lived out in the every day little things.

I’m thankful today for Little Things.

There was a time in my life where I felt very frightened of the future. I didn’t know whether we’d have a home to live in or not. I wondered if we’d have money from day to day. I felt very alone every day, no real friends, no one to talk to as I worked and went about my day. During that time I was tired, had lots of work to do and homeschooled four children. It was so difficult. I walked from our house to the barn or to do chores and prayed constantly. I felt at the time that I was grasping for anything to make me smile, something to cheer me and give me hope.

God gave me hope and cheer that year through the little things I encountered daily. Sometimes those things were very little indeed, but I found them, and they brought a smile to my face. They were things like, a mulberry tree full and bending down with mulberries outside my window. A beautiful red cardinal that sat in the bedroom window every morning, singing me awake. A deep purple crocus blooming in the snow. A 20 minute lunch break where the phone didn’t ring!

Jesus used Little Things to show us how much the Father loves us; the little birds and the pretty flowers in Matthew 6,  the good wine of John 2 and the loaves of bread and fish of Mark 6.

I have learned to slow down and appreciate the little things, and to look specifically for the little things every day. I believe God has given us the little things in life to bring a smile to our faces and to teach us that we really do require very little in life. When the Little Things appear, teach yourself to praise God for them.

Here are a few Little Things that have brought some happiness into my life and for which I have thanked and worshiped God.

Little Things:
My children playing quietly together
The dogs asleep by the heater
Red Nandina berries amidst the frost of winter
A clean kitchen
A hot cup of tea and a good book
Being able to walk through my yard
Little lettuce plants determined to grow in the winter time
A Christmas card arriving in the mail
NO mail at all
Beans and cornbread
Music coming from somewhere in the house
Frost
Quiet
Babies feet
Wool socks
Scripture
A phone call from a friend “just because”

Have you ever stopped to appreciate the Little Things? Make today the day that you slow down to appreciate the Little Things and talk to yourself about the One who considers even the little things of importance.

Now its your turn:

What are some Little Things you are thankful for? Why are you thankful for them, what do they ‘do’ for you?
